When it came time to send Nick to preschool, Emily left no stone unturned in teaching him allergy awareness and providing him with the tools to keep himself safe. One thing she did was write Bentley Goes to School. This age-appropriate book was written to be incredibly simple to follow and to address not only Nick’s allergies, but also his concerns about being away from family members for the first time. When Nick squealed “like me!” as Emily read the first pages of the book, our author knew she had connected on a special level. Over the next few weeks, Nick asked to read the book several times a day and Emily decided other families could benefit from its simple message as well.
Bentley Goes to School
As a loveable dog named Bentley approaches his first day of school, he begins to worry about being away from his parents and keeping himself safe due to his food allergies. This age-appropriate book was written to be incredibly simple to follow and to address not only a young child’s food allergies, but also his or her concerns about being away from family members for the first time.
Because Bentley and his teachers know how to keep him safe, he successfully manages his way through multiple activities including snack time, arts and crafts, and recess. At the end of the day, Bentley has had such a good time, he can’t wait to come back tomorrow.
This book is not allergy-specific to appeal to a wide range of families managing life-threatening food allergies and special dietary needs. It also includes a section of caregivers notes to help foster conversations about food allergy management outside the home.
Bentley Goes to School is the first in what will be a series of books teaching allergy self-advocacy and safety.
